1) Playwriting Competition.

We're hoping many of you take advantage of this great opportunity to have your work evaluated by a professional and possibly win money for your one-act plays!
First Prize: $200
Second Prize: $150

Entry Rules
1. The play shall be an unproduced one-act play in English, with a maximum playing time of sixty (60) minutes and a minimum of twenty-five (25) minutes.

2. a) The manuscript shall be typewritten on one side of the page onlyand double-spaced.
b) A page showing only the title of the play and the author's chosen pseudonym must cover the manuscript.
c) Number all pages beginning with the first page of dialogue.
d) Entrants must submit three (3) copies of the manuscript.

3. Applicants shall submit one sealed envelope containing the title of the play, the pseudonym, the author's real name, address, phone number and student number or Hart House Senior Member number.

4. A contestant may enter as many as three (3) plays, but must use a different pseudonym for each entry.

5. The appearance of the writer's name or other identification mark on that manuscript shall disqualify the manuscript.

6. Those manuscripts postmarked later than March 31, 2008 will not be eligible for the competition.

The Drama Festival brings together student drama groups from across the U of T campuses for three nights of judged exhibition.
This year it is taking place Jan 31, Feb 1, and Feb 2. Three plays go up each night.
Our submission "Ends of the Earth", written and directed by Katie Binnersley, will play on the Thursday.
Shows start at 7:30pm.

Since we have a lot of evening programming I was asked to pass on some information about Walk safe. They provide a safe walk service to the Subway, around campus and across Queen's Park.

2. IMPROV WORKSHOPS

As part of the University of Toronto Improv Fest, we are offering two improv workshops.

Both are on SATURDAY, JAN. 26TH, from 1-4pm.

Both are completely FREE to all our members.

1) Julie Dumais: "The Group and the Individual"

Julie is the Regional National Director of the Toronto Branch of the Canadian Improv Games. She is also a producer of projectproject, one of Toronto' smost impressive improv shows.

2) Kevin Patrick Robbins: "Dialogue Techniques in Improv"

Keven is the artistic director of Impatient Theatre Company (ITC). As part of the ITC, Kevin also produces the Toronto Improv Fest, which will celebrate its 7th year this summer as Canada's largest improv festival.

DRAMA FESTIVAL SUBMISIONS:
DUE: NOVEMBER 2nd 2007 6PM
The Hart House Drama Society is looking to submit up to two plays to the U of T Drama Festival. Submissions must be made by student dierctors.
All plays must be previously unproduced, written by a current student or a recent alumni (graduated in the last year). Plays
must run at least 15 minutes, and no longer than 60 minutes.
The festival will take place in the Hart House Theatre the week January 30 to February 2. The festival brings together productions from all drama related societies and clubs across the three campuses.
Prizes will be awarded in several categories.

Submissions should include:
1) A copy of the play
2) Director's CV
Qualified directors will be asked in for an interview on Novermber 5 or 6.

The Hart House Drama Society is looking for submissions for its spring production which will take place the week of March 31st to August 5th in the Hart House Theatre.
We are looking for submissions from directors.

Submissions should include:
1) Title and name of writer.
2) Director's CV
3) Half-page outline of the Director?s vision for the play
4) A preliminary budget
5) Any production team you have (stage managers, set designers,
costume designers, etc)

Specifically we are looking to put on a commercially viable, previously produced play. There is no specific type of play we are
looking to put on, but we would like the stress the need for the show to be able to sell a 450 seat theatre for 4 performances.

All submissions should be given to the Porter's Desk at Hart House to be placed in our mailbox.
Feel free to drop off submissions before the deadline.
The director must be a student at U of T or a Hart House senior member.
All positions within the production are unpaid.

1. HHDS Beg, Borrow and Steal Festival
The festival will take place October 10th, 11th, 12th, and 14th. It involves 4 original student works, each performed twice.
If you want to get involved there are several options:

a) Cast for Rob DiPardo's production.
The parts needed are as follows:
1 male to play a bitter, comic husband.
1 female who can play an older woman.
1 male who doesn't mind dressing as a priest.

Characters Needed:

Auditions and rehearsals have to be done in 2 weeks. Play to be about 10min.

Take place every Tuesday from 7-9 PM.

An open forum where members can place anything performance related on stage.
The first one will take place at 7 PM on Thursday, September 20th.
Performances in the past have included everything from Improv to Martial Arts routines. This week's will include a
performance by members of the Improv Team.

New call for submissions for Beg Borrow and Steal Festival - DUE DATE JULY 20, 2007

The Hart House Drama Society is making a second call for submissions for the Beg Borrow and Steal Festival. Due to limited time between the original call and due date there was a lack of submissions. We hope that giving more time will encourage students to submit, to what we believe, is a great opportunity to put original student work on stage.

The new call date will be July 20, 2007.
Since the original call it has also been decided that we will no longer require the writer and director to be separate people, however it is preferred. The plays submitted also do not need to be complete at the time of submission.
If you are a writer without a director, or a director without a writer and wish to find a match please e-mail us at harthouse.drama@utoronto.ca before June 30, and we will try to set you up with a writer or director who has also expressed interest in the festival.

The Hart House Drama Society is pleased to present three Chekhov Vaudevilles - The Bear, The Proposal, and The Evils of Tobacco as its annual mentorship show.

Each year the HHDS pairs student actors, designers, and technicians with Toronto theatre professionals to produce the show. This year director Zed Pitkin leads the cast of actors and technicians.

The Vaudevilles have something for everyone: complexly stupid characters, dancing, death, heart attacks, and heartache, and a whole lot of fun!

'Kulanu', the LGBTQ Jewish social group on campus, is planning a theatre/pub night for next Thursday, February 22 to see Acting Upstage's production of Elegies: A Song Cycle" (starring Barbara Barsky and Thom Allison) at the Berkeley Theatre (...and Betty's, around the corner, for drinks and discussion, following the show!).
Kulanu is a burgeoning queer young(ish) Jewish -- but VERY inclusive -- group in and around

HH Film Board member Sabrina Moëlla is looking for an actor for a short movie, to be filmed on January 28th at Hart House.
She will be casting a young man, 20 to 25 years old to be the main character. Any acting experience is an asset.

2) Participant call for 'Delectable Divas V' (March 9th, 2007):

'Delectable Divas' is Hart House's annual International Women's Day
showcase, which typically has focused on female entertainers. This year, 'Divs" will be presenting a series of vignettes centring around the inception of Women's Day, how it was formed and took shape around the world, and important moments throughout its history. These vignettes will be linked through excerpts from famous women figures (political, social, cultural), poems, song and dance to form a cohesive narrative about all the positive social changes women have been behind throughout the 20th century.

'Delectable Divas' has been running for 5 years now and features a large selection of complimentary desserts along with fabulous entertainment.

We are looking for HHDS members who would be interested in reciting monologues, readings etc. to pull the show together.

1) University of Toronto Improv Fest!--THIS WEEKEND (Jan 19, 20, 21) at 7:30 pm

January 19, 20, and 21 HHDS presents the first ever U of T Improv Fest.

Teams face off in a battle of spontaneity from which only one team will emerge the victor. Friday January 19 will feature Univeristy of Toronto, York, Guelph, and Humber. Saturday January 20 will feature McGill, Queens, Ryerson, and Carlton. Sunday is the finals, which will include the top two teams from each night!

The event takes place at Hart House at 7:30 each night.
Tickets are only 2 dollars at the door.
Your vote helps decides which team moves on!

As part of the Improv Fest HHDS will also be presenting a workshop with a professional improviser. This will take place at Hart House from 2-5pm on Saturday January 20.
The workshop is free for HHDS members, and 5 dollars for non-members. Sign-up at the Porter's Desk
starting Thursday afternoon.

Playwright Robert DiPardo is debuting a new work, titled "Big Rain", at a public table reading this semester. Actors are needed for the roles of PHILLY, a drifter; JEAN, a housewife; and the supporting
characters of THE MAN and THE SALESMAN. The date of the reading is yet to be determined, but the Society will factor in participant availability.

The HHDS has received an open invitation to a free screening of a movie called "Freedom Writers" on Wednesday, November 29th at 7pm at the Cumberland theatre. The movie stars Hilary Swank and is about a teacher who inspires a group of inner-city youth to pursue education instead of violence. The passes that are available are double passes (i.e. two guests per); they are free and anyone can attend. 1) Casting Call for Student Movie Shoots

The Hart House Film Board workshop participants are shooting several short movies over the weekend of November 4 & 5 (mostly 5) and are looking for a variety of actors. Many roles up for grabs. 2) UofT Drama Festival Submissions Deadline: Friday Oct 27th!
We are looking for playwrights and directors!

We're now accepting submissions at the Porter's Desk! We want submissions
from:
A. Playwright Submission
A student-written play (60 minutes or less) can be submitted that is unaffiliated with any director.

B. Director Submission
A student director unaffiliated with any play can apply to direct one of the playwright submissions. Directors must provide a letter about why they wish to direct, and including any previous experience. Scripts will be available for them to read prior to their interviews. Interviews will also be held November 6th and 7th, time TBA.

C. Package Submission
A student director can apply to direct a student-written play (60 minutes or less) as long as it is not written by the director.

You are able to submit to both categories. All scripts/directors will be chosen on the merits and strengths of their proposals.

RULES
- All submissions should be in an envelope that is clearly labelled ATTN Hart House Drama Society.
- Three copies of the scripts must be submitted.
- Your submission must include a cover page with your full name, student number, telephone number, and email address, and the submission type (ie Playwright, Director, or Package submission). Submissions missing one or more of these will not be considered.

Longform and Intelligent Shortform: The Scene, the Group and the Game
Improv is the art of spontaneous theatre, and can take on many forms. Fundamental to all those forms is solid scenework. In this workshop Julie will take the group through a series of exercises that will teach the fundamentals of good scenework and then how to further apply those skills to a broader longform format.
All Improv backgrounds are welcome.

A Toronto-based actor, improviser and producer, Julie has been involved with improvisation for well over a decade. She recently wrapped a 3 year run as co-producer and performer at the weekly Monday-night deathmatch cabaret: catch23 IMPROV. Julie has performed as part of the Second City National Touring Company, at the Vancouver International Improv Festival, as a returning member of the Winnipeg Improv Festival ensemble and with the always-changing cast of the soundtrack project: her pet longform project cinematically scored by acclaimed turntablist, DJ Hangman. She is also one half of 10,000 to Flight (an appealingly appalling improv outfit with creative partner Mark Andrada) and she works regularly with the Impatient Theatre Co. (as a performer and a coach). When she’s not whoring herself as a voiceover “artist” or thinking about her next meal, Julie runs the largest regional high school improv tournament in Canada and teaches nationally with the Canadian Improv Games… where she once won a national gold medal. A very long time ago.

Cost: 20 dollars for the workshop. There is no HHDS membership discount, as this is an Improv Intensive. Participants may also want to join the Improv Jams Improv Group, which performs and practices regularly and is hosting an Inter-University Festival in January!!

We are looking for playwrights and directors!

We're now accepting submissions at the Porter's Desk! We want submissions from:

A. Playwright Submission - a student-written play (60 minutes or less) can be submitted that is unaffiliated with any director.

B. Director Submission - a student director unaffiliated with any play can apply to direct one of the playwright submissions. Directors must provide a letter about why they wish to direct, and including any previous experience. Scripts will be available for them to read prior to their interviews. Interviews will also be held November 6th and 7th, time TBA.

C. Package Submission - A student director can apply to direct a student-written play (60 minutes or less) as long as it is not written by the director.

You are able to submit to both categories. All scripts/directors will be chosen on the merits and strengths of their proposals.

- All submissions should be in an envelope that is clearly labelled ATTN Hart House Drama Society.
- Three copies of the scripts must be submitted.
- Your submission must include a cover page with your full name, student number, telephone number, and email address, and the submission type (ie Playwright, Director, or Package submission).

1) FRINGOSITY
We are looking for all types of performances by any number of people: dance, music, acting, poetry readings, special talents - you name it! Past performances have included improv teams, African drumming, dance numbers, one man renditions of Monty Python, bands, as well as monologues, solo vocalists, and performance pieces. All levels of experience welcomed and encouraged.

Screenings are on November 1st and 2nd (so we can prepare a performance order - this is NOT an audition). Please email harthouse.drama@utoronto.ca for a sign up time!
Fringosity takes place on Friday November 17th in the Debates Room.

2) BEG, BORROW and STEAL FESTIVAL

Four kooky plays compete for the Audience Choice Award Thurs Oct 12-Sun Oct 15th, 8pm in the Debates room. Completely student-created, each production receives a budget of 100 dollars, rehearsal space, a venue, and a workshop with Allana Harkin, a theatre professional. Come out and see the wild results!

3) ONSTAGE!
If you're interested in Fringosity, why not come out to OnStage!? We're looking for anything theatrical to put on in the Arbor Room, on October 19th from 7-9. Do you have a play you'd like to stage/have read? A band that wants to play? Any act - this is an open mic type of event. Please email harthouse.drama@utoronto.ca with what you'd like to do, and how long it will be, and we will email you back with a confirmation and performance order.

5) THE BEAR AND THE PROPOSAL - Our Theatre Mentorship Program is seeking actors and crew.

The Hart House Drama Society is proud to present Chekvov Vaudevilles: The Bear & The Proposal, which will be performed March 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

We are looking for enthusiastic ACTORS with great comic timing for this production to work with professional director Zed Pitkin.

Auditions will be held Thursday Oct. 19th and Sunday Oct. 22nd from 11-5 at Hart House.
We also have another tentative audition date set for Saturday Oct. 21st from 7:15-10:30pm also at Hart House, which is yet to be confirmed. Come prepared with one comic monologue. Please

The HHDS is also looking for dedicated CREW members for the production to participate in our Theatre Mentorship Program. This program gives students a tremendous opportunity to work with professionals in different aspects of theatre. We are looking for a student to serve as an assistant director and apprentice to Zed as well as an assistant technical director, costume designer, and choreographer. Other than the mentorship positions, students are also needed for positions involving sound design, lighting, and stage management. Please e-mail Zed in regards to the available positions.

The First Annual Beg, Borrow and Steal Festival - Four plays are given rehearsal space, a venue, an 100 dollar budget and a workshop with professional director, Allana Harkin. Each play gets two performances and will compete for the Audience Choice Award and an extra performance.

CHEKHOV VAUDEVILLES
The Hart House Drama Society is proud to present Chekhov Vaudevilles: The Bear & The Proposal, which will be performed March 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th:

In The Proposal, we have a FATHER who is being driven mad by his aging but still unattached daughter; we have a HYPOCHONDRIAC neighboring estate owner who after decades of vacillating finally comes over to ask her hand in marriage; and we have a DAUGHTER who wants to have the final word on everything no matter what !! In this piece we will focus on how the principal motivation of the characters increasingly takes them over, until their life becomes a LIVING FARCE.

In The Bear, HER sermon is about being the most loving and faithful wife - or so she says; and HE thunders on about being the Don Juan of the steppe - or so he says. To show the discrepancy between the real self and the idolized one, they would act out their real self in song-and-dance inserts. We will use early turn of the century popular hits, where for example she would dance out in a Tango (Life can't go on without that certain thing), the deadly trap her passionate love could be; and then he would mime out a Love song (You've got me crying again) showing him not as a Don Juan of the steppe but as a shy, affectionate little boychik. The Bear we would tackle as a MUSICAL COMEDY.

1) Drama Executive Meeting

Open to new members. We will be discussing and organizing our events over the next few months. We are looking for new members to help us keep the balls rolling! We are also still in need of a treasurer!

We are still looking for events to fill our program. If you have a song and dance, a play to read, a musical performance, poetry - basically anything that can be performed in an artistic venue, please RSVP with the time length of your piece to harthouse.drama@utoronto.ca with OnStage! in the subject line. We're looking for programming throughout the year, so keep sending us your suggestions!

Otherwise, please come out and watch!

3) Later this week, we'll be sending out an audition call and crew call for the Chekhov Vaudevilles, part of our Theatre Mentorship Program! Students will get to work with professionals (director, designers, choreographers etc) while creating this production! Each professional will mentor assistant students in their respective fields. It's a great learning opportunity and it culminates in a terrific production in March! Keep your eyes open!

Playwrights' Circle and Improv Jams!

The Playwrights' Circle, 6-9 PM (North Sitting Room, 3rd Floor of Hart House).
Bring some pieces of writing, scenes, monologues, or a whole play. Whatever stage of the game, we'll read it and discuss it. If you're interested in getting feedback from other people who love to write and love theatre, this is the forum for you. Or just come out, sit back and listen!

Come out to this casual info session and meet the current executive, see what the Society will be up to over the coming year, and find out how you can participate in the wide range of theatrical activities we're very excited about offering. Improv Show

Hilarious and cutting edge, HHDS improv is back to create more mayhem this September! Join them in the Arbor Room on Wednesday, September 13 at 8pm for a laugh-filled ride into the new school year. This event is open to everyone and is entirely FREE.

Auditions for "The Killdeer"

Hart House Drama Society is presenting James Reaney’s The Killdeer from Nov. 30 to Dec. 2. Actors are needed to fill all roles, 7 female and 8 male. The play has been described as a “macabre comedy” and has many good roles for actors of all ages. Please prepare a short (2 minute max.) monologue; you may be asked to read from the script. Copies of the play can be found in most libraries in the volume The Killdeer and Other Plays.

Auditions will be held on Saturday September 16th from 1pm to 5pm in the North Dining Room at Hart House.

Crew Call for "The Killdeer"

The Killdeer is a macabre comedy by Governor-General’s award winner James Reaney. His first play, it premiered in Toronto in 1960 and has since been performed across the country and in Britain.

To celebrate Reaney’s 80th birthday, Hart House Drama Society is reviving this poetic and magical work, from November 30th to December 2nd, 2006. We are looking for people to work on the crew, both backstage and front of house. People are needed for set building, costumes, lights, sound, and stage management. We would also like to hear from interested designers in all areas.
